Another Look at Stereotypes

A forceful example, but as I don’t think anyone really likes stereotypes, I think we should ask another question. How do stereotypes come about, and how can we deal with them?

That answer is much more complicated.

We tend to blame others for harboring stereotypes of us, but in many ways we are to blame ourselves.

Each of us has a unique human identity. Some of us are more or less alike in various ways, but each of us has things we share with everyone and things which set us apart from everyone.

But coming to grips with that identity is difficult and often painful, and high school is one of the most critical times in that process.

Our society propounds this spoken or unspoken list of stereotypes, for everything from Koreans to synchronized swimmers to math students. Whetever you are, there are probably stereotypes associated with it.

And I think, in an effort to assert our own identities, we sometimes buy into those stereotypes. It becomes easier to take on a few traits which don’t fit us than to explain more complicated traits that do.

To fit into whatever group we feel we deserve to be a part of, we start to assume stereotypes and homogenize.
And so in asserting our identity in fact we destroy it.

But it’s easy to say all that, and much harder to really be a unique and honest individual. There are many sides of myself about which I am not as open as I’d like, and may always be.

But ask yourself, when you’re choosing an activity or a fashion statement, or even a word to say: Am I doing this because it’s who I am, or because it’s who I think they want me to be?

And to that same end, make an effort not to categorize people. It’s easier with people you know well, but understand that people you don’t know are every bit as complicated and mulitfaceted.
That’s not ‘some nerd’; he has a name, friends, interests, quirks.
That’s not ‘some preppie’ or ‘some emo’. Those are people, like you in some ways, and different in others.

That’s difficult too, but well worth it. Suddenly you realize just how interesting and unique everyone is!

  1. I think its interesting what you said about identities being destroyed by assuming stereotypes. However, stereotypes are a product and a part of society and will, to some degree, always be around. It is natural to group people together based on certain outward traits, whether innocently or maliciously. Any society will have different stereotypes, which will in turn play a large part in determining the identities of its inhabitants. It is limiting and ridiculous to use these stereotypoes to determine a large part of your actions and often destroys relationships between people that would have been just fine otherwise. However, I don’t think people have identities that they are born with that stay with them throughout their lives and are either suppressed or allowed to flourish. They just go with the flow and get changed around a lot, often because of stereotypes. No one can escape stereotypes, but they don’t have to snub people on account of them.

  2. It nearly seems that stereotypes are one of the methods we use to cope with the gigantic, persistent case of information overload in our lives. It’s simply easier to generalize when you’re not connected to someone (could you argue that there’s little reason not to?). And when you do work face to face, you automatically start dropping your stereotypes.

    Is there any correlation between intelligence & memory vs. your level of tolerance? Maybe Vinnie can drop in and share some psychology info.

    Am I doing this because it’s who I am, or because it’s who I think they want me to be?

    Could society be right? Could it be dead wrong? It’s probably that clichéd middle ground where you naturally have enough social normalcy.

  3. No one likes stereotypes, but everybody uses them. the first conversation in the first article was a modified version of a conversation overheard in ILC. Moreover, I myself have had similar experiences when I was involved in the school choir.

    I agree with you that stereotypes are often used as a “junk food� type way of charachterizing oneself. I myself might consider that idea. I often find myself taking some sort of over-acted-out demeanor in order to be able to be expressive while hiding feelings I don’t want to be expressed.

    That withstanding, I do think that peer pressure does force people to fall into stereotypes. Peer pressure often tends to take a semi-violent form, almost like taunting in elementary school. And even when not, it is almost like a form of repetative conditioning, a loud noise in which it is hard to preserve one’s own identity.

  4. I think that we should define what a stereotype is before we discuss this any further. I don’t really know what one is. Since we can never really know all of the complexities of a person, we always have to assume certain things about them based on what we think we know about them. In this sense, people probably even stereotype themselves, because who really knows how anyone thinks. I’m not even sure how I think or who I “really am.”

    If stereotypes are ignorance, then we must have so many stereotypes on so many levels that it’s just mind-boggling. I don’t even want to think about it (or maybe I do). On the hand, if a sterotype is being used in the sense of an all-emcompassing racial or class thing (usually summed up in one or two word phrases), then its a different issue altogether.

    In the first situation, stereotypes are not really a bad thing, because as we are not completely omnipotent, we need to be able to deal with information in a way that doesn’t make us explode. In the second situation, they just plain suck.
